Therapy Dog

Meet Walter, the Kaysville Police Department’s therapy dog. Walter supports victims at different points in their interaction with the criminal justice system, including interviews, court proceedings, and other key moments. His job is simple but powerful: help people feel a little calmer and safer during one of the hardest days of their lives.

Trauma can make it hard to stay calm, feel regulated, or even find the right words. Research shows that the presence of a therapy animal can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and regulate emotional responses. For many victims, having Walter nearby provides quiet comfort and makes it easier to remain grounded and engaged during the process.

Walter has completed both service and therapy dog training. His specific task is providing deep pressure therapy. When asked, he gently rests his head on a person’s lap, using his weight and warmth to offer steady, calming pressure. Similar to a weighted blanket, this can help soothe intense emotions, reduce anxiety, and support emotional regulation during difficult conversations.

Walter can be requested to support victims in coordination with the Victim Advocate.
